Door B — Shopify Payments
First, a distinction Shopify itself draws and most panicked sellers miss: a hold is a pause — nothing decided yet, everything waiting on documents. A reserve is a decision — a percentage kept until a set expiry, with a review before it ends. They have different doors, and knocking on the wrong one burns weeks.
A review pause — identity, business details, or a risk flag. Different from a reserve: nothing is being kept yet; everything is waiting.
The path: Reply to the email from Shopify's team with the exact documents asked for — for holds, the appeal is answering that email thread completely.
Shopify's own page explains it: a percentage of payouts held until a set expiry, reviewed before expiry — they can keep, reduce, or raise it.
The path: Reserve track: run clean to the expiry, then the pre-expiry review is your moment — sales record + low disputes is the argument.
The payments account is ended (the store may survive on another gateway). Balances follow the processor's hold practice — Shopify Payments runs on Stripe's infrastructure.
The path: Escalation ladder, Stripe-shaped: written amount/clause/date request, review points, then the lawyer threshold.
The one hold no appeal moves: a court order, tax levy, or creditor claim against the balance. Shopify must comply.
The path: Lawyer, immediately — this hold is a legal matter, not a support ticket. The kit's lawyer page lists what it costs.

Checked 2026-10-18. Where the source class says "reported," that is the range sellers report in practice — it is not the platform's promise, and your notice controls.
